Menopausal Breast Alterations
Breasts alter due to gravity, lose their previous firmness and full shape.
This is normal and almost all menopausal women will notice some breast changes from menopause.
One should be more concerned with the increased risk of cysts, fibroids, and other abnormal growths in the breast tissue. Women can develop abnormal growths at any age, but menopausal women are certainly in a higher risk category.
History, Self Examination, Imaging studies, and physician consultations are ever so more necessary in menopausal patients.
Menopausal Breast Changes:
Reduced circulation of estrogen in a post-menopause female causes the skin to lose moisture and elasticity. This has a stretching, sagging effect on the breasts. Women should expect to change a cup size due to the changes.
Changes to expect and be aware of:
- Lumps, which may be due to minor fibroids or cysts, abnormal discharge, or a more severe condition like cancer
- stretching, stretch marks, side pointing of nipples & widening of the gap between breasts.
Collagen and cocoa butter, found in specialty creams, lotions, and oils, have been shown to reduce stretch marks and keep the skin moisturized.
